PARRAMATTA EELS
Christmas wishlist: A premiership
Eels fans have the same Christmas wish every season, as they’re enduring the longest premiership drought in the NRL.
It’s now entering its 36th year, stretching back to 1986, but the good news is their premiership window remains open - for now.
Next year marks the final seasons of Dally M second-rower of the year Isaiah Papali’i (Tigers), gun hooker Reed Mahoney (Bulldogs), Marata Niukore (Warriors) and Ray Stone (Dolphins).
The Eels allowed 13 out of their top 30 squad to come off contract at the same time last month, but they’ve since retained Clint Gutherson, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Junior Paulo.
Parramatta spent most of last season in the top four before a late form slump saw them finish fifth.
They bowed out in the second week of finals for the third year in a row.
Coach Brad Arthur must work out how to get his men playing their best footy in September, not March.

Parramatta Eels Best-case scenario Even if all the cards fall their way, it’s hard to see this team lifting the premiership trophy in 2022. Parra don’t seem to have the player with wow factor like they did the last time they made a grand final a dozen years ago. A top-four berth is a possibility but may be the ceiling on their capabilities. Worst-case scenario The Eels could slip and slide out of the finals equation relatively quickly if their recruitment issues continue to be a distraction and any of their impending departees try to get a mid-season switch to their next club. Exactly. Eels don't have that Hayne type of player with amazing ability along with a strong and experienced team.

If they could get Brett Kenny back out of retirement he would be a huge improvement. Bellamy would make a huge difference as well, he has talent.

Parramatta Eels
Some form in September
The Eels have been, to put it bluntly, short of the full package over the last few years.
2021 marked the third time in a row Brad Arthur’s side have been bundled out of the finals in the second week.
While they always seem to show signs, and even did so in the match they eventually lost against Penrith this year, the record isn’t good enough.
With players departing at the end of 2022 and their premiership window flickering, this may be the last chance for the blue and gold to break their long-term drought for some time.

More bad stories being written these days than good. Surely everyone is doubting the coach by now. 2022 will be another repeat of this year or won't even make the top 8. Still only a few questioning the coach directly rather than this article indirectly.

This will be the final year the Eels have any hope at all. Too many good players gone the following year. I think the idea of players signing with another club with a year to go on there contract is the most lame, stupid idea I have ever seen in pro sports. Why would a team even want to keep a player who is going elsewhere the following season. Not the mention the team that signed that player doesnt want to see that player get injured playing for another club. All around just pathetic idea.

And how can their heart be in it knowing they'll be leaving the following year. The opposite of building a dynasty and remaining at the club. I wouldn't take those players seriously in 2022. And Mahoney has signed with the Bulldogs, an arch rival.

The current system for signing players is unprofessional. The NRL has had the most stupid signing player ideas for a long time. Remember when the players had the first 13 weeks of the season the players could change there mind on signing with another club and stay with there current club. How stupid was that.

Adding to last statement, remember Josh Papalii signed with the Eels and later changed his mind and stayed with the Raiders, stupid, stupid, stupid.

Adding to last statement, remember Josh Papalii signed with the Eels and later changed his mind and stayed with the Raiders, stupid, stupid, stupid. Josh realised "no premierships" at the Eels and chickened out. I'd take Turbo Tom, best fullback in the game. He can turn an entire game around based on his performance. I'm happy with Gutherson, but Turbo you would think will be a premiership player within the next 5 years.
