WHAT’S THE MATTER PARRAMATTA?
I’ve never truly appreciated just how important backrowers are until watching the start of Parramatta’s 2023 season.
They’re missing Shaun Lane (jaw), Ryan Matterson (suspended), Isaiah Papali’i (Wests Tigers) and Marata Niukore (Warriors) from their grand final side - and you can tell.
The effect it has on the Eels’ attack and how it limits their shape cannot be overstated.
A good backrower can really hold up the opposition’s defence, but without them defenders easily slide off the lead runner and attack the centre.
The best backrowers in the game create an extra second which allows the centres outside them to get one-on-one with their rivals.
I’m not saying the Parramatta backrowers paying at the moment are doing a bad job, but a guy like Bryce Cartwright is not your typical line-running threatening backrower.
