I think Leichhardt Oval is 19th century standard dump and could never understand why they played that mid-week competition there. One trick looks like he has a huge ego but sucks in big games and back door was just a total asshole in every way.
I remember Mario Fenech interviewed back door on he Footy Show and Mario was awesome with him, back door still had a problem with Mario, and came off a a total asshole.

In 1999, last time Eels played Balmain Tigers at Leichhardt, I was wearing an Eels jersey and a kid that supported the Tigers stuck his finger up at me. I was on the Eels Club bus leaving the ground. In 1997, this Tigers fan kept on saying to me "9 million dollars" about the Eels spending big on their players. Just before kick off he whispered in my ear, "I think you guys will beat us". But the Eels lost. I was also there in 2001, when the Eels put on a record score of 66-12 against the Wests Tigers. Benny used to call Mario a wog when both would pack down in a scrum and Mario replied, "what about you". I heard a story but need to confirm this one that Mario had a family issue, tragedy or disability, and Benny would mock that during games. Benny was a big time sledger and low. |
