Round 13, 2010: Parramatta 24 d Melbourne 10
SMH
Will Swanton
5th June 2010
JARRYD HAYNE was placed on report for headbutting Billy Slater as anti-Storm sentiment spilled over at Parramatta Stadium last night.
The build-up had been intense. Chairs would be thrown onto the field. Spectators would holler the kind of abuse usually reserved for Quentin Tarantino movies or games involving Johnathan Thurston. Mothers and fathers would block the ears of their sons and daughters while they joined in. The kiddies would have to apologise when they hollered, ''You suck, Finch!''
The reaction to the Storm last night was suitably hostile even if spite night drew the Eels' smallest home crowd (7572) of the season. This could be the ultimate insult to the club that stole a couple of premierships under false pretences - less people even care enough to turn up and death-ride them. But those who do possess a frightening anger.
And what an ill-feeling. Slater, according to the constant chant, is a wanker. He was sin-binned for 10 minutes for an elbow to Hayne's head.
Storm coach Craig Bellamy copped abuse all night. While the Storm players were out on the relative safety of the field, his box was just behind the members' area. One-finger salutes were thrown his way throughout. Howls of abuse. One kid offered the bird only to get a smack from Mum in return. When Hayne pushed his forehead onto Slater's in the 62nd minute, before they traded punches and wrestled on the ground, it was on for young and old. Two minutes later, Slater was in the bin with the Eels' Daniel Mortimer. The latter had been unable to resist the temptation to retaliate.
The ground announcer had already done his best to engender hatred. ''Here they are, the 2009 Melbourne Storm,'' he said as Cam Smith led out the visitors. There were empty seats galore, though. There was one sign saying ''Go Home You Cheats'' but that was just about it. One lonely sign. Smith lined up conversion attempts with the crowd shouting ''Cheat! Cheat!'' Another chant: ''Give us the trophy!''
