PARRAMATTA have sent out an NRL finals warning, clicking into gear today to secure fifth spot on the ladder courtesy of a 68-22 hiding of Brisbane at Parramatta Stadium.
The Eels backline was at its devastating best as the home side ran in 13 tries to the Broncos' four, Brisbane now facing a sudden death trip to Melbourne while Parramatta travel to face the New Zealand Warriors in the opening game of the finals series on Friday night.
Coming into the game on the back of three straight losses, the Eels recovered from a slow start to totally dismantle the Broncos with Jarryd Hayne, Timana Tahu, Ian Hindmarsh and Feleti Mateo all scoring doubles while Krisnan Inu bagged a hatrick en route to a 26-point haul for the match.
Parramatta were steered around the park superbly by halfback Tim Smith, who bounced back from a subpar game against St George Illawarra last week to toy with the Broncos defence.
The Eels scored early but soon found themselves down 16-6 as Justin Hodges conjured up a double for the visitors, Nick Emmett blowing an opportunity for an even bigger lead when he inexplicably lost the ball with no defender in sight as he ran over to score.
It proved to be one hell of a turning point with the Eels scoring four tries in the space of 12 minutes to take a 34-16 lead into halftime.
Tahu's first of the day just before the break was a scintillating effort, Hayne allowing a pass to hit him in the legs before regathering and finding the rugby-union bound flyer who celebrated his four-pointer by slam dunking the ball over the crossbar.
Hodges succumbed to a corked quad muscle shortly after the restart as Brad Thorn ran through four defenders on his way to a try which gave the visitors some hope of an unlikely comeback.
But this was not the afternoon to mess with the Eels as they ran in six tries in 23 minutes to blow the Broncos off the park before Inu completed his hattrick right on fulltime, making a fool of opposite winger Darius Boyd with a dummy and step in the process.
The Broncos will be sweating on the fitness of Hodges ahead of the clash with the Storm while gun prop Dave Taylor is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a suspected broken thumb.
PARRAMATTA 68 (K Inu 3 J Hayne 2 I Hindmarsh 2 F Mateo 2 T Tahu 2 E Grothe T Smith tries K Inu 7 T Smith goals) bt BRISBANE 22 (J Hodges 2 S Michaels B Thorn tries C Parker 3 goals) at Parramatta Stadium. Referee: T Archer. Crowd: 17,112.
