Eels 18 Rabbitohs 12
Returning Parramatta stars Timana Tahu and Nathan Cayless showed their value to the Eels today, scoring in their first games back from injury to help set up a thrilling 18-12 win over South Sydney at Parramatta Stadium.
Amazingly, the Rabbitohs were still in it in the final minutes despite an attack that malfunctioned for most of the match and desperately tried to play catch-up at the death.
Captain Cayless, back from a broken hand, centre Tahu, returning from a long-term hamstring problem, and winger Joel Reddy scored Parramatta's tries while Krisnan Inu kicked three goals.
Shane Rigon and Nathan Merritt got the Rabbitohs' four-pointers with Merritt booting two goals.
Down 14-0 at half-time, Souths fought back early in the second half of a physical clash and pulled it back to 14-6 when interchange hooker Rigon was awarded a controversial benefit of the doubt try by video referee Steve Clark in the 51st minute.
Rigon crashed over from dummy-half but appeared to lose control of the ball with just a limp wrist applying the downward pressure, the awarding of the try sending most of the 15,202 crowd into a frenzy of disapproval.
But the Eels went further ahead in the 62nd minute when Inu sent a cut-out ball to winger Reddy who crossed out wide for 18-6.
Parramatta missed several chances to land the killer blow.
In the 67th minute Eric Grothe was denied by Clark after the winger fumbled a put-down from a Brett Finch bomb.
The Eels were denied again four minutes later when Rabbitohs winger Paul Mellor pulled off a try-saving tackle on a runaway Fuifui Moimoi.
Souths made a last-ditch attempt to save the match when a Ben Rogers bust sent Merritt over to make it a converted try the difference with four minutes to play.
But, on a day Souths' attack failed with dropped balls, forward passes and balls thrown over the sideline, Rogers dropped the kick-off - backwards - and David Peachey knocked on in the same set.
Somehow the Rabbitohs came up with a scrum feed in the final minute and just 20 metres out from the Eels' line and, after Manase Manuokafoa was held up, justice was done when Grothe defused a bomb to keep the match safe in the Eels' keeping.
After going up 2-0 through a 12th minute Inu penalty goal, Cayless reached out for the line in the 21st minute after Inu had batted back a Finch bomb.
Rugby bound Tahu was in five minutes later when he beat three defenders on a superb individual run to the line.
