Round 11, 2007: Parramatta 30 d New Zealand 6
ABC.net.au
The Eels took advantage of an error-riddled performance from the New Zealand Warriors to notch a comfortable 30-6 win in Monday night's round 11 NRL match-up in Parramatta.
The Warriors put in one of their worst performances of the season, completing just 25 of 40 sets, and slumped to their fourth consecutive loss as the Eels leapfrogged them into the top eight.
Burly winger Manu Vatuvei had an absolute shocker for the Warriors, spilling two balls that led to Eels tries and failing to clean up a grubber kick that resulted in a try to Parramatta centre Ben Smith.
The Eels scored two tries to one to lead 12-6 at half-time, and kept the visitors scoreless while touching down for three more tries in the second stanza to record a comfortable win.
The home side opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Jarryd Hayne scored a try eerily similar to his freak four-pointer for New South Wales in Wednesday's Origin match.
After a Timana Tahu flick pass put him in space down the left wing, Hayne put in a deft chip kick off his right foot and outran the Warriors defence to dot down in the corner.
Parramatta looked to have moved further ahead just minutes later when Ben Smith took advantage of an error from Vatuvei to touch down unopposed on the right wing. But Vatuvei was given a reprieve when the video referee ruled the ball had been stripped from him by the Eels defence.
But the video referee could not save Vatuvei eight minutes later when he twice failed to clear up a Tim Smith grubber that allowed Ben Smith his first for the match and a 12-0 lead for the Eels.
The Warriors struck back with just three minutes left in the half when Logan Swann cleaned up a towering bomb on the right wing and crashed over to reduce the margin to six points.
The home side extended their lead seven minutes into the second half when Daniel Wagon crossed for a rare try, before Grothe cleaned up a spilt bomb from Vatuvei in the 63rd minute to cross on the right wing for a 22-6 scoreline.
Just 90 seconds later a clearly shaken Vatuvei dropped the ball making a hitup just 10 metres out from his own line, and Eels captain Nathan Cayless scored off the ensuing set of six to put the match out of reach for New Zealand.
In worrying news for Parramatta, Tahu left the field just 10 minutes into the second half with what looked to be a recurrence of his troublesome hamstring injury.
