Round 6, 2004: Parramatta 32 d Manly 26
ABC.net.au
Parramatta has scored an unconvincing six-point win over Manly in the National Rugby League match at Brookvale Oval.
The Eels bounced back from 14-0 down midway through the first half and were on the right end of a 50-50 decision late in the match to escape with a 32-26 win.
The Sea Eagles snatched the early lead with a penalty goal to Andrew Walker in the fourth minute of the match.
The home side soon made it 14-0 with converted tries to Steve Menzies (10th minute) and Andrew Walker (14th minute).
Almost against the run of play, the Eels slipped back into the match when Matthew Peterson put the finishing touches on a Junior Langi grubber kick.
Luke Burt added the extras to reduce the margin to 14-6.
The Eels snatched an unlikely 18-14 half-time lead when Adam Dykes and Nathan Cayless combined to score two late tries.
Dykes crossed first in the 35th minute when a decision by the Eels to run the ball on the last saw Cayless break free.
The Eels skipper got the ball away to a supporting Dykes, who crossed for the try.
Cayless was rewarded for his efforts just moments later when he scored after a nice break by Dykes.
The lead see-sawed after the break, but the Eels found themselves with a 28-22 lead midway through the half.
But the Sea Eagles replied with a converted try to Sam Harris in the 65th minute, reducing the lead to two.
The final 15 minutes saw both sides make several mistakes as each tried to snatch the winning try.
Centre Albert Torrens crossed late in the game for the Eagles, only for the referee to call a pass in the lead-up play forward.
A relieved Parramatta did enough to protect its two-point buffer and put the match beyond doubt with a try to David Vaealiki in the dying seconds.
