Round 25, 2003: Parramatta 16 d Brisbane 14
ABC.net.au
Parramatta has left Brisbane's season on a knife-edge after a thrilling 16-14 victory in their NRL clash at Lang Park.
The Eels out-enthused the Broncos. They were quicker to play the ball, committed in defence, and made the most of their opportunities.
There was no questioning Brisbane's commitment, but the Broncos looked like a team which has forgotten how to score tries.
The result means Brisbane's place in the top eight can still be taken by either Parramatta or St George, depending on other results.
The Eels' Darren Treacey said his side had been fired up to go for the win.
"We didn't want to finish next week - we wanted to go to the semis," he said. "We came here with a very positive attitude after last weekend and that was the difference."
Both sides scored three tries for the match, but the Eels broke a 14-all deadlock with an Adam Dykes field goal in the 69th minute.
Michael Witt added a second field goal for Parramatta with two minutes to go.
First half
The two sides had been locked 10-all at half-time after two tries apiece.
Parramatta scored first, through winger Jason Moodie after a strong run and offload by second rower Nathan Hindmarsh.
That try came just minutes after Eels' centre Ashley Graham was taken from the field with a badly broken leg, the stoppage holding up play for several minutes.
The Eels dominated the first 20 minutes but Brisbane took the lead with a converted try in the 24th minute.
Fullback Darren Lockyer created the try after sprinting behind the ruck as the ball was being played to create an overlap on Brisbane's right. He ran at the line, confusing the defence before throwing a long pass to centre Casey McGuire.
He stretched out and banged the ball down on the line, and video referee Eddie Ward awarded the try. Michael De Vere's conversion from wide out gave Brisbane a 6-4 lead.
Hindmarsh scored Parramatta's second try, showing his strength to touch down after a flick pass from Adam Peek. Halfback Witt converted to give Parramatta a 10-6 lead.
But the home side hit straight back when a good offload from captain Gorden Tallis - making his comeback to the side after five weeks out with a knee injury - found Lockyer who threw another long pass for McGuire to score.
Second half
The second half began with Brisbane five-eighth Ben Ikin being knocked out in a head clash with Hindmarsh.
Shortly afterwards Parramatta scored when a forward pass by Broncos prop Petero Civoniceva gave the Eels a scrum feed 35 metres out.
Witt took the ball from the scrum and passed to Parramatta five-eighth Dykes who kicked ahead. Moodie outpaced De Vere to score out wide.
Brisbane could find no answer until the 62nd minute when a crossfield bomb from Lockyer was spectacularly taken by substitute Craig Frawley, who scored. De Vere's conversion attempt missed and the side's were locked at 14-all.
Between the two Parramatta field goals, Brisbane went within a whisker of scoring a try which would have wrapped up the match. Tallis charged forward as Brisbane ran the ball on the last play. He was caught just short of the line and had he looked right, he could have put Lockyer in under the posts.
Instead, as he was going to ground Tallis turned to his left, found no Broncos player trailing him in support and the play died with Brisbane's chances.
