Harrigan lays down the law
Grand final rematches are magnets for controversy and following their boilover win in the 2001 decider there was no love lost between the Eels and the Knights when they clashed at Energy Australia Stadium midway through 2002. The Eels came into the match with a clear game plan to slow down the athletic Newcastle pack by controlling the ruck, but Bill Harrigan would have none of it. He smashed the Eels 12-3 in the penalty count and after several warnings, sin binned Eels pivot Michael Buettner in the 56th minute. Parramatta wouldn’t take the hint, so Nathan Hindmarsh and Adam Dykes joined Buettner on the sidelines leaving the Eels with just 10 men on the field. Buettner was sin binned for a second time shortly before full-time for verbally abusing a touch judge. Despite the madness, the Knights could only manage a 24-18 win.
