1997 World Sevens Final: Parramatta 32 d North Sydney 22
In front of 29,561 Rugby League fans over the two-day tournament, the Eels first grade team was victorious in their first Rugby League Competition since the Grand Final win in 1986. Captained by Jarrod McCracken, the team included Nathan Barnes, Jason Bell, Troy Campbell, Jim Dymock, Stuart Kelly, Chris Lawler, Chris King, Jason Smith and Shane Whereat.
The Eels went through the preliminary rounds on the first day defeating the South Queenland Crushers and the Balmain Tigers. In the quarter-finals, the Eels met the spirited and talented Lebanon team who were playing in the Sevens Championship for the first time. The Eels were victorious by 22-10 and moved on to the semi-final against Western Suburbs.
The semi-final was probably the toughest game of the competition for the Eels. It was close all the way but the turning point was when Troy Campbell saved a certain try by knocking the ball out of the hands of Western Suburbs representative Ken McGuiness as he dived over the line. The Eels were next to score, which determined the final result-Eels 24 defeated Western Suburbs 12.
The Parramatta Eels met the 1996 runners-up, the North Sydney Bears in the final. The Eels led 18-10 at half-time after a try to Jason Smith 20 seconds before the half-time siren. In the second half the Eels never looked in danger of defeat and ran away with the game 32-22.
So after 11 long years, Parramatta walked away with a trophy plus $65,000 in prize money and the Man of the Series award, given to Troy Campbell.
