Round 5, 1993 v Eels: Gillies plays game 100 on Multicultural Day
A record crowd of 27,804 witnessed a multicultural extravaganza at Belmore Sports Ground on Easter Monday as the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs tore the heart out of Parramatta in an impressive 42-6 victory.
It was a day to remember both on and off the field as rugby league supporters of all nationalities came together to watch the high-flying Bulldogs take on the Eels.
In team news, backrower Simon Gillies ran out for his 100th game for the club, while Andrew Patmore came into the centres and replaced the suspended Jarrod McCracken.
Martin Bella and his front row partner, Kiwi Gavin Hill, bashed and barged their way through the Parramatta defence, while halfback Craig Polla-Mounter was devastating as the base of the scrum.
Canterbury led Parramatta 14-2 at the end of the first half and it could have been 40-2, such was their control and purpose.
The Bulldogs received a standing ovation from the grandstand at half time, but if the first half effort was superb, then the second half was simple brilliant.
Brett Dallas bagged a hat-trick and Jason Williams grabbed a double as Canterbury ran in nine tries to one in a display which evoked memories of the club’s great sides of 1979-80 coached by Ted Glossop.
