1990 Nissan Sevens: Manly 24 d Parramatta 22
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
The third annual Sevens tournament attracted a record crowd of more than 25,000 at Parramatta Stadium. The crowd thrilled to seven hours of excitement which produced a record 98 tries and finished with Manly scoring a tight 24-22 win over locals, Parramatta. It was a confidence boosting win for the Sea Eagles, who finished out of the five in 1989 and had been under pressure throughout the lead-up to the 1990 season. Fitness freak Des Hasler was the star of the day. He finished with six tries for Manly, but set up many more, showing incredible endurance and no shortage of skill in the process. Early favorites Souths were bundled out in a semi-final by Parramatta by 44-12, while highly fancied Balmain also fell to Parramatta 12-8 in extra-time in the quarters. Rabbitoh winger Graham Lyons scored most tries (seven) while he also finished top pointscorer (30), along with his cousin, Manly's Cliff Lyons. Manly took home prizemoney worth $60,000.
