Round 20, 1991: Parramatta 42 d Gold Coast 22
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
The clash of second last versus last produced 12 tries, 64 points, a win for Parramatta and confirmed the Gold Coast as wooden spooners for 1991. The feature of the day was a Golden Oldies touch football match staged before the main game, but it was two "Golden Oldies" who were the scene-stealers on the field. Opposing each other for possibly the last time were State of Origin combatants Wally Lewis and Brett Kenny. Appropriately, the pair orchestrated the fortunes of their teams in a free-scoring affair. Lewis threw critical passes for two of the Gold Coast's tries and scored a third himself after backing up a long break. But it was Kenny who emerged on top when he inspired his team to a crushing final surge in which the Eels scored 24 points in 20 minutes. The Seagulls went to a 22-18 lead when Lewis scored his try in the 46th minute but from that point it was all Parramatta. Kenny showed all his old skills to lay on tries for centre Scott Mahon and winger Michael Erickson at crucial times and joined in the final spree as the young Parramatta backs ran riot. They scored seven of the Eels' eight tries, confirming their status as one of the game's best attacking backlines.
