Round 14, 1991: Parramatta 30 d Newcastle 0
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Plagued by internal strife, the embattled Newcastle Knights slumped to a new low when beaten 30-0 by Parramatta. Talk of dissension in the ranks was rife and it showed on the field in one of the Knights' poorest performances in their four seasons in the Winfield Cup. Parramatta, who had struggled for form all season, quickly clicked into the groove and took Newcastle on at their strength - in the forwards - and finished well on top. Tough prop Peter Johnston continued his improvement for the Eels with some solid tackling in the front row, despite a dose of the 'flu. The reliable Mark Laurie and skipper Brett Kenny backed him up well and paved the way for Parramatta's classy backline to fire in front of their home crowd for one of the rare occasions in 1991. Winger Scott Mahon, just three matches back from a shoulder operation, was in electrifying form and scored two tries, the second a dazzling effort from dummy half which involved a chip and chase. Centre David Woods, five eighth Glen Liddiard and halfback Jason Bell joined in on the attacking frenzy which left the Knights demoralised. After a fine start to the season, Newcastle had fallen to 12th on the ladder and they were rapidly going backwards after solid years of progress in 1989 and 1990.
