Round 13, 1991: Parramatta 18 d Illawarra 16
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta climbed off the bottom of the ladder to upset semi-final candidates Illawarra 18-16 and maintain an unbeaten record against the Steelers at Parramatta Stadium. The Eels raced to an early 12-4 lead after tries to Jason Bell and Michael Erickson and looked set to carry that advantage to the break until Illawarra struck right on halftime. It came from a concentration lapse by Eel half Bell who chip-kicked in his own half straight to Illawarra's Ian Russell, who launched a thrilling attack, leading to a try to Neil Piccinelli after eight players handled. When Doug Delaney scored for the Steelers after the break and the Eels began to make a string of fundamental mistakes, Illawarra were poised for victory. But somehow Parramatta regrouped and Illawarra failed to press home their advantage. Eight minutes from fulltime, winger Erickson scattered the Steelers' defence to score next to the posts from a penalty tap. Andrew Fitzhenry's simple conversion assured the Eels their third victory of the season. Evergreen Brett Kenny was Parramatta's best. He was heavily involved in everything his team did.
