Round 8, 1991: Parramatta 16 d Balmain 15
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta broke their Winfield Cup duck for 1991 against the luckless Balmain in a dramatic match at Parramatta Stadium. The Eels stole the win with only a few seconds left on the clock after Balmain were penalised in possession of the ball near their own tryline. The penalty, awarded by newly promoted referee Brian Grant, was a bitter pill to swallow for the Tigers, who were also searching for their first win of the season. It came when Parramatta fullback Glen Liddiard struck out wildly in a Balmain play-the-ball, and instead of penalising Liddiard, Grant pinged Balmain fullback Garry Jack for being offside. The Tigers looked home and hosed before the penalty, thanks to a 77th minute Ben Elias field goal which broke a 14 all deadlock. Balmain, with Origin forwards Ben Elias and Steve Roach inspiring, hit back from a 14-4 deficit to draw level and then sneak one ahead with the Elias field goal. Parramatta lock and captain Brett Kenny scored two tries to lift his tally with the Eels to 99. The Tigers lost second-rower Paul Sironen with a serious knee injury during the match.
