Round 19, 1990: Parramatta 19 d Wests 12
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta were lucky to escape with a 19-12 win over Wests after they had trailed 10-2 shortly before halftime. A controversial try to lock Mark Laurie brought Parramatta back into the match after Wests' forwards had created havoc for the Eels earlier in the match. Laurie's try came after a mad scramble for a "live" ball in the Wests' in-goal area. Halfback Peter Sterling kicked into the in-goal, but Magpies Stan Presdee and Brett Docherty failed to ground the ball and Eels' centre Jason Bell had a swipe at it before Laurie touched down. Understandably the try was a point of consternation in the Wests room after the match. And so was the penalty count of 10-2 against the Magpies, which guaranteed Parramatta a huge share of possession in the second half. The great Sterling-Brett Kenny partnership held court in the second half, gradually choking Wests out of the game. The Magpies were forced to do a huge amount of tackling late in the game and their line held firm except for one breach when replacement Ian Gately finished off a neat movement involving Sterling and exciting winger Danny Crnkovich.
