Norths' failure to finish off promising movements all but ended their charge to the semi-finals when they were beaten by Parramatta 12-10 at North Sydney Oval.
For the second time in 1990, the Bears were desperately unlucky to lose to the Eels. In the first round they went down 11-10 after they were considered the better side for much of the match.
Coach Steve Martin claimed responsibility for one decision that could have cost them a draw when he decided against kicking for goal from a penalty late in the match.
Ian French and Jason Martin spoiled one tryscoring opportunity in the second half and five-eighth Greg Florimo set up some good breaks only to see the final pass go to ground.
The battle of the master, Peter Sterling, against the apprentice, Jason Martin, was an absorbing one which finished with honours even. Parramatta hooker Mark Barnes was one of the stars of the Eels' win.
