Round 11, 1990: Parramatta 17 d Canberra 8
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Against all the odds, Parramatta scored a morale-boosting 17-8 win over premiers Canberra at Parramatta Stadium. The Raiders were expected to be at their peak for the match, particularly after receiving a scare against Newcastle just five days before. But from the outset, Parramatta showed their level of commitment was as high as at any stage of the season, and they had scored their first try after just six minutes. Again the gilt-edged scrumbase combination of Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny provided the impetus. A Sterling pass which cut-out Kenny found Jackson and then Danny Crnkovich toed the ball through to score. Then a Kenny flick pass for Sterling provided space for Jackson to score after later Kenny's evasive skills allowed winger Joe Bartolo to score. Canberra were hit hard with the loss of skipper and inspiration Mal Meninga after half an hour, and the heavy workload on their State of Origin players was beginning to tell. Prop Glenn Lazarus was magnificent, completing 51 tackles, but his team was out-enthused by the Eels, who were out to protect an undefeated record against Canberra at home.
