Parramatta returned to winning form for the first time in three weeks when they accounted for Illawarra 16-12 at Parramatta Stadium.
The Eels enjoyed the bounce of the ball in this match after luck had all but deserted them in previous games.
But they were hardly convincing in a match of dropped balls and spoiled opportunities.
Illawarra went to the break with an 8-6 lead and were unlucky not to increase that when a ball went to ground with them hot on the attack after 50 minutes.
Instead, Eels winger Danny Crnkovich kicked the ball through, regathered and scored the try that changed the match.
Parramatta forwards Matt Goodwin and Craig Izzard ran powerfully with the ball all game and were their team's strongest performers.
For Illawarra, second-rowers Neil Piccinelli and Ian Russell showed classy touches throughout.
