Round 18, 1989: Parramatta 18 d Penrith 11
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Against a team of wounded Panthers, Parramatta scored a shock 18-11 win at Penrith Park to stay in the race for the semi-finals. Penrith, clinging desperately to second spot, took several players into the game, who, under normal circumstances would have been sidelined. Greg Alexander, Mark Geyer, and John Cartwright all carried injuries into the match. With Peter Kelly, Chris Mortimer and Colin Van der Voort already out injured, the crisis was becoming critical. All the while, John Monie's team of "no stars" plugged away, producing another special effort to stay in touch with the leading teams. Youngsters David Woods, Mark Barnes and Jason Bell took over from the Parramatta "old guard" in this match, although Brett Kenny was still using all his guile and experience to lead the way. The performance of the youngsters was especially heartening for incoming coach Mick Cronin, who was searching for life after Peter Sterling. Penrith prop Geoff Gerard set a remarkable milestone in this match when he became the first player in the history of Sydney Rugby League to play 300 first grade matches.
