Round 14, 1989: Parramatta 20 d St George 8
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Maestro halfback Peter Sterling celebrated his 200th first grade game for Parramatta as his team edged a step closer to the semi-finals with a 20-8 win over St George. Sterling was as classy and effective as ever, sparking almost all of Parramatta's attack and organizing the defence with the guile of a four star general. The Eels had the match in hand at halftime when they led 14-0, and despite tries to St George wingers Clinton Mohr (50th minute) and Ricky Walford (65th minute), they never looked troubled. Young five-eighth Mark Barnes, learning all the tricks outside Sterling, sealed victory with a late try. Saints second-rower John Fifita stood out as the best forward on the field, tackling ferociously and involving himself heavily in attack.
