A three try effort from winger Michael Erickson boosted Parramatta to a convincing 28-12 win over gutsy Panasonic Cup finalists Illawarra.
The Eels forged ahead in the minutes leading up to halftime as the Steelers, gallant 22-20 losers to Brisbane in the Cup final at Parramatta five days earlier, tired noticeably.
From an 8-2 lead Parramatta raced ahead 18-2 by the break and no fairytale comeback looked imminent this time from Illawarra.
With the Cup heartbreak still on their minds and the absence of English recruits Andy Gregory and Steve Hampson, in America for a promotional match, it was always going to be an uphill struggle for Ron Hilditch's men.
But to their credit they fought back strongly, reducing the leeway to 22-12 midway through the second half.
Erickson brought up his hat-trick with a 70th minute try which sealed the result and kept alive Parramatta's semi-final hopes.
