Round 10, 1989: Parramatta 20 d Cronulla 10
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta halted a late Cronulla comeback bid at Parramatta Stadium to fight their way back into the top five with a 20-10 win. The emergence of new five-eighth Mark Barnes, playing inside Brett Kenny and outside Peter Sterling, was a highlight of the Eels' win. Barnes justified coach John Monie's reluctant decision to split the Kenny-Sterling pairing, by playing the game of his life. He tackled to a standstill, scored the match-clinching try and provided opportunities for the men outside him. An Alan Wilson try put Cronulla back in the picture at 14-10 with eight minutes to play but it was Barnes who scored the last try after Mark Laurie had made a break. While Barnes was impressive, the support of maestro halfback Sterling was integral to Barnes' performance. Sterling was at his creative best: kicking, probing and passing to perfection.
