Round 4, 1989: Parramatta 18 d Balmain 16
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
In a bid to stage one of Rugby League's great comebacks, Balmain ultimately ran out of time. Trailing 18-0 with only 15 minutes to play, Balmain rallied magnificently to make Parramatta work feverishly for their two Winfield Cup points. The Eels raced to a 12-0 lead after 14 minutes and for the remainder of the first half soaked up an intense Tiger barrage to keep Balmain off the scoreboard. After the break Parramatta centre Brian Jackson scored his second try which gave the Eels a commanding lead. But when Brett Kenny was sent off on a high tackle charge and then prop Mark Clinton sin-binned for 10 minutes, Parramatta were forced to defend with 11 men. At that point Balmain struck. Tries to Paul Sironen and fullback Michael Moss followed in rapid succession. And four minutes from the end the Tigers produced a scorcher. It covered 65 metres, involving Bruce McGuire, Steve Roach and Ben Elias before winger Tony Chalmers scored under the posts. But time had beaten the Tigers' gallant charge. Man of the match, again, was Peter Sterling.
