Round 3, 1989: Parramatta 8 d Penrith 6
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta and Penrith battled out a wet weather thriller at Parramatta Stadium and it was the Eels who emerged with their unbeaten record intact, winning 8-6. The intensity was semi-final quality as both sides fought desperately for the Winfield Cup points. Parramatta won the game on the strength of a Brett Atkins try in the 56th minute. Atkins, playing one of his finest games, scored after lock Mark Laurie had scrambled for a loose ball, the result of a Peter Sterling charge down. Penrith's try came just after halftime, when Andrew Simons flashed in off a Mark Geyer pass. The Panthers soaked up an enormous amount of pressure during the tryless first half and when they scored after the break, the signs looked ominous for Parramatta. But it was the enthusiasm of Laurie, the damaging runs of Atkins and the brainpower of Peter Sterling that combined to lead the Eels to a fine victory in slippery conditions.
