Round 11, 1988: Parramatta 22 d Souths 14
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
An all too rare display of up-front power from Parramatta forwards Mark Clinton and Geoff Bugden launched the Eels to victory number five for 1988. Domination in the forwards had been a distant memory for the Eels, who had struggled in that department for close to two years. But new boy Clinton, 23, and the renowned Bugden turned in 80 bruising minutes to send Souths reeling. Parramatta looked well in command of the match until the 67th minute when Souths clawed back to 14-all - but a committed final drive from the Eels forwards pushed them to a 22-14 win. Peter Sterling, bouncing back from a below par effort against Queensland only days earlier, directed his side with masterly touches; Paul Taylor and Michael Moseley worked themselves to a standstill. Souths' loss put the side in the danger zone, with several teams leapfrogging them after the Rabbitohs two consecutive defeats.
