Round 9, 1988: Parramatta 34 d Illawarra 12
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Illawarra failed their biggest pressure test of the season, crumbling alarmingly to Parramatta 34-12. After a promising winning run, and with a big home crowd behind them the Steelers were in good shape to continue their unbeaten record at Wollongong Showground. Sadly for their fans they never looked like doing it. With the redoubtable Peter Sterling controlling proceedings virtually on one leg (a painful thigh injury restricted him), his eager Eel teammates went on a blitz. In just half an hour Parramatta had the match parcelled up at 20-0 - with little prospect of an Illawarra comeback. The Steelers were never in the game, even when Darren Strutt scored from a rare Parramatta defensive slip right on halftime. It was a momentary lapse for the Eels - and with Mick Delroy, centre Brett Garnon and the Parramatta forwards striking form, they went straight back to work. Garnon kicked seven goals from seven attempts and Delroy finished with two slick tries for the Eels. « Return to 1988 | 36 views
