Round 2, 1988: Parramatta 30 d Balmain 10
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta turned in their most physical display in years to beat Balmain at their own game at the Stadium. It was spiteful affair from start to finish. Balmain's Kevin Hardwick was sent from the field, three players were sin-binned and bitter sledging ran throughout the match. In the end, Parramatta matched Balmain's forward big-guns and settled down to play thrilling open football. It netted them six tries and 30 points and the talk around the Eels' camp was that the "spirit of '86" had returned. Tragedy struck Parramatta however, when Brett Kenny tore his cruciate ligament. The prognosis was that the Test centre would be sidelined for the season. Balmain had the power and class to win the match but let themselves down badly with silly penalties and crucial mistakes.
