Round 26, 1987: Parramatta 30 d Penrith 4
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Parramatta finished their most disappointing season since 1980 with a crushing 30-4 defeat of an inexperienced Panther outfit in bitterly cold conditions at Penrith Park. As storms raged around Sydney, the Eels' own whirlwind Peter Sterling destroyed the Panthers with yet another match winning performance for Parramatta. His kicking in the blustery conditions confounded Penrith who could do no better than trial 4-0 at halftime after playing with the wind at their backs for the first 40 minutes. Sterling controlled play in the second-half and the Eels laid on five more tries. It was a cruel irony for Sterling that he should have one of his finest seasons in the blue and gold while the team crashed around him. Without his brilliant talent the Eels would never have come to within three points of the semi-finals. But in the last match of the minor premiership he received excellent support from hooker Michael Moseley and five-eighth Mark Laurie and several other Eels weren't far behind.
