Round 23, 1987: Parramatta 17 d Illawarra 14
Official Yearbook of the NSWRL
Terry Fearnley, Illawarra coach for 1988, must have been delighted with the spirited display of the Steelers in their narrow loss to the Eels at the Stadium. They failed to win by three points but showed some promising qualities in a match that was always close. Halfback Perry Haddock played on with pain-killers to overcome a broken left foot, just as he had done for the previous four weeks. He led from the front, driving his team-mates for 80 minutes. Parramatta captain Peter Wynn wrapped up the game when he scored with five minutes to go and replacement half Mike Eden kicked the Eels to a seven point break. Illawarra five-eighth, Greg Mackey's try in the last minute was all too late, and even though Haddock declined to give Dean Carney the chance to convert, preferring to get the ball back into play, the hooter beat them. Parramatta second-rower Peter Ford, playing some of his finest football was Parramatta's best. He made 32 tackles and put in a committed 80-minute effort.
