Parramatta demolished Canterbury 28-6 in the major semi-final, their biggest win over the Bulldogs since a 38-14 victory at Belmore in 1971. Canterbury captain Steve Mortimer won the toss and decided to run into the gale. The decision proved costly-at 20-0 after forty-five minutes the match was over. With key forwards Steve Folkes, Peter Kelly and David Gillespie out injured, the Bulldogs looked extremely vulnerable, and their lack of strength up front exposed their less gifted backs to the superior speed of their Parramatta opponents. When Tony Chalmers and Mark Laurie combined brilliantly in a carbon copy of the famous Gearin-Brentnall try in the 1980 grand final, Parramatta led 28-0.
Canterbury's first try to Andrew Farrar came with eleven minutes to go. The Eels scored six tries to one and earned a place in their eighth grand final in the last eleven years.
