Round 12, 1986: Parramatta 28 d Canberra 18
Big League Magazine 28th May - 3rd June, 1986
Rival fullback Mick Delroy (Parramatta) and Gary Belcher (Canberra) treated Parramatta Stadium fans to a thrill packed first grade tussle last Sunday. A vastly depleted Parramatta combination won the match 28-18 but the free - running fullbacks dominated talk in most post mortems. Each scored two tries and set up another. Delroy, an Eels' junior with enormous potential, showed he'll become Parra's permanent custodian when Paul Taylor has had enough. He has plenty of dash and enterprise and is learning the ropes of positional play in defence. Belcher, a Queensland import, is a brilliant attacking fullback who has been a model of consistency for the Raiders this year. His two tries, both spectacular efforts, kept Canberra in contention but sadly he lacked the support of his team-mates when the going got tough. Canberra led 6-4 at the break but were flattened by a blue and gold blitz immediately after the resumption. Tries were raced on by Delroy and centre Brian Jackson, sending Parra to a 16-6 lead before Belcher crossed twice in 10 minutes to edge his team ahead 18-16. With 20 minutes remaining, Ron Quinn darted over for a try handy to the posts and winger Tim Barnes notched the sealer 10 minutes from the bell. Eight tries in 80 minutes was fast and furious stuff for the 12,135 fans who appreciated a free-flowing football contest. Apart from Delroy, best for the Eels were Peter Wynn, Ray Price, Tim Barnes and Neil Hunt while Canberra got plenty of value from Belcher, Dean Lance, Paul Martin and Phil Carey.
