Round 3, 1983: Parramatta 46 d Penrith 8
By Peter Frilingos of the Mirror
Premiers Parramatta took savage toll of Penrith's high mistake rate in the Winfield Cup at Belmore Sports Ground last Saturday.
The Panthers' statistical sheet showed they missed 41 tackles and usually even half that many can be fatal against a team with Parramatta's attacking prowess.
Parramatta raced in for nine tries to one to provide their third straight awesome display.
The score of 46-8 would of been much higher had champion goal kicker Mick Cronin managed more than five goals from 11 attempts.
As has been the case in recent games, the Panthers started the game with plenty of fire and should have had at least one try on the board in the opening minutes.
After 11 minutes centre Brad Izzard had only to send a good pass to centre partner Chris Houghton 25 metres out and a try was there for the taking.
But Izzard's pass went behind Houghton and a couple of seconds later Test star Brett Kenny raced 60 metres upfield for the Eels, only to be pulled down by Penrith fullback Mark Levy.
From the next ruck, Peter Sterling delayed his pass to send Steve Ella crashing over for the first of his three tries.
While they didn't surrender at any stage, Penrith's mistake rate in both attack and defence continued to accelerate and by halftime the premiers led 14-2.
After only five minutes in the second half, rookie winger David Liddiard ran around the defence to link with fellow flanker Neil Hunt who scored near the posts.
The Panthers rallied briefly when big Lew Platz sent Graeme Jennings over under the posts but that was to be their last show of defiance.
Hunt and Liddiard got into the touchdown act again in quick succession as the Eels gave the ball plenty of air.
A mis-kick from Henry Foster saw the magical Ella bolt 40 metres under the posts and replacement prop Chris Phelan galloped 20 metres down the blind side to score in the corner.
The try of the game came a minute from time when Hunt fielded the kick off a few metres from his own line and dashed to centre-field brushing off tacklers.
Near halfway he passed inside to Ella who ran a few metres before sending the ball out to Parramatta's other replacement prop Geoff Bugden.
The ever-present Liddiard loomed up on Bugden's outside and gleefully accepted a high pass to race over untouched.
