Round 22, 1981: Parramatta 20 drew Manly 20
The NSW Rugby League should package Sunday's Manly v Parramatta clash on film and distribute it to every school in the state.
In a match which had no bearing on the final five both teams played outstanding football to finish 20-all after a thrilling 80 minutes.
The game had everything...bone-jarring defence, chain passing and long distance tries.
A Tony Melrose field goal four minutes from fulltime levelled the scores after the lead had changed throughout the game.
The crowd of 18,449 roared their approval, urging the players on like gladiators in a colosseum.
It was an unbelievable game to farewell Cumberland Oval with work expected to commence soon on the new multi-million dollar stadium.
Manly looked like racing away with the game in the opening stages with two snap tries by their former Magpies John Dorahy and Les Boyd.
But down 10-0 the Eels came charging back with a super try by Tony Melrose, quickly followed by another to Kevin Stevens.
Suddenly it was 10-all and Manly were being stretched to the limit in defence.
Parramatta grabbed the lead four minutes before halftime when skipper Steve Edge raced over for a try following a neat Ray Price pass to Peter Sterling.
The conversation and a penalty goal by Mick Cronin right on the break allowed Parramatta to enjoy a 17-10 lead.
The second half started the same way as the first. Manly showed how classy an attacking team they can be with two sensational tries.
Manly in front 18-17 were looking good, however Cronin put Parramatta back in front with a penalty goal but Eadie replied soon after with a goal and with 20 minutes remaining Manly lead 20-19.
Fittingly a Tony Melrose field goal four minutes from the end levelled the scores.
Both teams tried desperately to break the deadlock in the final minutes but couldn't.
Parramatta 20 (T.Melrose, S.Edge, K.Stevens tries, M.Cronin 5 goals, T.Melrose field goal) drew Manly 20 (T.Mooney, J.Dorahy, S.Booth, L.Boyd tries, G.Eadie 4 goals). Referee: J.Gocher. Crowd: 18,449.
