1980 Tooth Cup Final: Parramatta 8 d Balmain 5
On 20th August 1980, Parramatta won the Tooth Cup final by beating Balmain 8-5 at Leichhardt Oval.
It was a dramatic game. Ray Price and Bob O'Reilly were out for the season due to knee injuries and Mick Cronin was forced out after being suspended. Cronin and Wests Ted Goodwin were sent off after a confrontation in the spiteful match at Lidcombe the Sunday before - both put out until September 8. It was the second time Cronin, a model player, was sent off that season. The other was in a trial. He was subsequently exonerated.
Rookie, Michael Collins, a replacement goalkicker for Cronin, and Beetson, the veteran, were the heroes. Beetson won man of the match honors in a dour game played before a capacity crowd of 17,829. The Eels won 8-5 with Collins scoring all points with four goals. Balmain's Wayne Miranda scored the only try of the game, which gave the Tigers a 5-4 halftime lead. Collins was kept in the side for the following Sunday's match against Canterbury in one of only two first grade matches he played.
