Round 17, 1980: Parramatta 32 d Cronulla 7
By Allan Wilson Rugby League Week July 24, 1980
Parramatta's teenage centre sensation, Brett Kenny, whose bedroom walls are adorned with photographs of his football heroes, Mick Cronin and Steve Rogers, was the pin-up boy himself when the Eels handed out a 32-7 hammering to Cronulla at Endeavour Field last Sunday. Playing in only his second top grade game, the slim 19-year-old's sparkling display confirmed his rating as one of the most exciting youngsters on the Sydney Rugby League scene. Not so long ago, to a young, impressionable Brett Kenny, the names Cronin and Rogers spelt 'magic'. His father, Allan, a former Australian baseball representative, and still an active player with the Blacktown Workers' Club, used to take the boy along to watch Parramatta in action each weekend. From Holroyd High School, he graduated into Guildford Junior Rugby League ranks then played Jersey Flegg Cup with Parramatta before joining the district club this year. Last Sunday meant something special to him - he played in the same match as his boyhood idols, partnering Cronin in the centre and opposing Rogers. "It was a tremendous thrill, a wonderful experience for me," he said. "Mick has been a great help to me with loads of advice and encouragement and he has made the game so much more enjoyable." Indeed, Kenny appeared to be enjoying the Cronulla encounter enormously with Cronin making his customary breaks and frequently unloading to the rookie centre who showed sharp acceleration, good stepping ability and rugged defence in a brilliant 80 minutes' display. There was an alarming lack of cover in the Cronulla defensive pattern - players bunched together in mid-field and left the flanks glaringly exposed. Coach John Peard sent his charges onto the field with one directive - "attack". And attack they did with backs linking up with forwards in a breathtaking display of purposeful Rugby League, the like of which has rarely been matched this season. Prop Ron Hilditch produced one of his strongest performances for some time, spearheading the forward onslaughts and topping his team's tackle count with a remarkable tally of 35. Peter Sterling, who must surely be one of the most effective halfbacks in the Sydney competition, turned on another scintillating effort.
