1979 Major Preliminary Semi: Parramatta 24 d Cronulla 4
Parramatta ran away from Cronulla in the second half of the major preliminary semi-final, after leading 5-4 at halftime.
The Sharks failed to make use of a strong breeze in the opening stanza, and only inaccurate kicking by Mick Cronin who failed to punish the indiscipline of Paul Khan and the Sorensen brothers allowed them to stay in the match. A bruising try by Eels front rower Ron Hilditch gave his team the early lead before a second half avalanche of five tries completely destroyed the Sharks.
Six minutes after the break, former Queensland international Lew Platz charged at Cronulla's defence and stood in a tackle, then wrestled an arm free and placed the ball over the line for a try. Cronulla's kick-off failed to go the required 10 metres, and after the Eels worked play to within striking distance, Ray Price crossed for the easiest of tries to seal the match. Price also pulled off a sensational tackle when he flew across field to cut off Rick Bourke. Three tries in the last ten minutes to Glover, Cronin and Platz, saw Parramatta win 24-4 and advance to the major semi-final.
