1976 Grand Final: Manly 13 d Parramatta 10 at SCG
The 1976 grand final remains one of the great premiership deciders, an irresistible encounter that pitted Manly's experience and arrogance against the perennial underdogs from Parramatta. Eventually those very qualities won Manly the J. J. Giltinan Shield, but not before both teams waged a titanic struggle.
The forwards threw themselves at each other throughout the match. Eels skipper Ray Higgs sustained a badly broken cheekbone after an incident in the thirtieth minute, but refused to leave the field. It was a grand final performance reminiscent of John Sattler's in 1970. Nine minutes later Higgs was slugging it out with Manly strongman Terry Randall, but Peard missed the shot at goal from the ensuing penalty, which would of put the Eels two points up at the break.
Instead the scores were locked at 7-all. Former Easts premiership winger Jim Porter had scored the first try of the match for the Eels when he gathered Peard's bomb in the eleventh minute. Manly replied ten minutes later when Alan Thompson stepped around Price and passed to giant English import Phil Lowe for the try.
Parramatta finally hit the front 10-7 five minutes after halftime, when Geoff Gerard scored. However their advantage was shortlived when Eadie goaled in the forty-eighth and fifty-ninth minutes, capitalising on Ron Hilditch's propensity to concede foolish scrum penalties-five in all-at crucial stages.
Trailing 11-10 with seven minutes left, Parramatta were faced with an opportunity to win their first premiership and Neville Glover will never forget it. Big centre John Moran found himself in the clear and looking for support, found Glover unmarked outside him. Glover had yet to even touch the ball in the match! Unfortunately for Eels fans, Glover's brush with rugby league immortality failed to come off. He spilled the well-directed pass and the chance was lost. Two minutes later Eadie kicked his fifth goal from six attempts, again from a scrum penalty, to set up Manly's 13-10 win.
Manly 13 (P.Lowe try, G.Eadie 5 goals) defeated Parramatta 10 (J.Porter, G.Gerard tries, J.Peard 2 goals). Referee: G.Cook. Crowd: 57,343.
