1971 Minor Semi Final: St George 19 d Parramatta 8
In the minor semi-final, St George over ran Parramatta 19-8 after extra time. It was the first time since the Easts-Canterbury minor semi-final in 1960 that a first-grade semi-final had gone into extra time. The Dragons put on two converted tries and a field goal after the scores had been locked 8-all at full time.
St George held an 8-2 lead at halftime after tries to Ted Walton and Bob Clapham. However the Eels slowly edged their way back into the match, Keith Campbell kicking his fourth penalty goal just before the final siren to force the extra time. Five minutes into the extra twenty minutes, Saints halfback Billy Smith kicked a field goal to break the deadlock, and then two minutes later, launched a bomb which Ken Thornett fumbled for Langlands to gather and score. It was the solitary defensive lapse by former Test great Thornett, who had been lured out of retirement by the Eels. This was his last match. Two minutes later rookie lock Walton crossed for his second try of the match to finish the Eels for 1971.
St George 19 (E.Walton 2, R.Clapham, G.Langlands tries, G.Langlands 3 goals, B.Smith field goal) defeated Parramatta 8 (K.Campbell 4 goals). Referee: K.Page. Crowd: 38,157.
