1963 Minor Semi Final: Parramatta 9 d Balmain 7
Parramatta secured the most significant victory in their seventeen-season history when they beat Balmain 9-7 in a gripping minor semi-final at the SCG. Balmain were unable to compensate for the absence of leading point scorer and captain Keith Barnes, who was unable to play because of a niggling groin strain.
Two penalty goals to halfback Bobby Bugden saw the Eels grab an early 4-0 lead, before Laurie Fagan kicked a reply for the Tigers to make it 4-2 after twenty minutes. Ten minutes later Balmain winger Dick Quinn scored the first try of the match and when Fagan converted the Tigers led 7-4 at the break. Balmain's seven points had come when the Eels were reduced to twelve men after prop Noel Dolton sustained a nasty hand injury in a play-the-ball. Dolton was off the field for thirteen minutes having the wound stitched and returned to the field at the start of the second half.
At the twenty-three minute mark of the second half, Parramatta captain Ron Lynch crossed for a freakish try that put the Eels in their first preliminary final. A penalty kick attempt by Bugden glanced off the left upright and fell back into the field of play. Lynch was 'Johnny on the spot' and stormed onto the scene to race over for a fine opportunist try. Parramatta held on for a fine win as Balmain attacked in the closing stages with Bugden, Lynch and Ken Thornett the Eels' best.
Parramatta 9 (R.Lynch try, R.Bugden 3 goals) defeated Balmain 7 (R.Quinn try, L.Fagan 2 goals). Referee: D.Lawler. Crowd: 39,408.
