Rabbitohs v Eels: Murray back to bolster pack; Niukore's timely return
Much hangs on this match-up of premiership hopefuls hoping to bounce back from demoralising round 11 thumpings.
Hosts South Sydney face the bigger challenge having coughed up 50-plus points to competition front-runners Penrith and Melbourne in heavy round nine and 11 losses.
The fact that the Rabbitohs' only defeats of 2021 have come at the hands of their main rivals for a spot in the grand final will be especially concerning for coach Bennett.
The good news is that not only do they have one of the best coaches in NRL history to plot their comeback but they also boast one of the competition's most potent backlines.
Parramatta can take solace in the fact that their upset 28-6 loss to arch-rivals Manly appears, at this stage at least, to be more of a blip than an indication of deeper problems.
The rundown Team news Rabbitohs: Cameron Murray (ankle) and Jacob Host (quad) have both been named to make their returns, with Liam Knight and Jaydn Su'A relegated from the side humbled by Penrith.
Josh Mansour (head knock) will miss this week's game and his place on the wing is taken by Taane Milne.
Jai Arrow has been promoted to start at prop with Thomas Burgess going to the bench. Hame Sele joins the bench and Jed Cartwright misses out.
Eels: Prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard took an early plea on a high tackle charge and will miss this weekend's game. Oregon Kaufusi moves into the starting side and Marata Niukore joins the bench in his comeback game from a two-week suspension.
Five-eighth Dylan Brown has another week of his ban to serve.
Utility Will Smith (thumb) is likely at least another week away from a return.
Key match-up Damien Cook v Reed Mahoney: With Harry Grant a real chance of missing Origin I, is this a dress rehearsal for the clash between the NSW and Queensland No.9s? It appears only injury will stop Cook from being named while Mahoney is now a great chance of getting the nod for the Maroons.
Stat attack It's all about eliminating the negatives for South Sydney and Parramatta. Both rank in the top five for ineffective tackles (Eels No.2 - 203, Rabbitohs No.5 - 195) and top 10 for handling errors (Eels 4th - 106, Bunnies 7th - 103). Souths are also top 10 for penalties conceded (7th, 43) but Parramatta clearly have the upper hand here as only Newcastle (35) have conceded fewer than the Eels (37).

Walker worry after masterclass as hat-trick heroes run riot in Eels rout
Cody Walker sent a reminder of his talents to NSW coach Brad Fittler by steering South Sydney to a 38-20 defeat of Parramatta at Stadium Australia on Saturday but the Rabbitohs five-eighth’s Origin hopes may be in the hands of the NRL judiciary after he was one of five stars placed on report.
Souths lock Cameron Murray and Parramatta forwards Nathan Brown and Ryan Matterson also face anxious waits to learn whether they are available for Blues selection, while Eels hooker Reed Mahoney’s hopes of a Queensland Origin debut may depend on the match review committee.
Walker had a hand in five of his side’s seven tries as the Rabbitohs left edge all but put paid to Eels winger Blake Ferguson’s prospects of a NSW recall, with his wing opposite Alex Johnson scoring a hat-trick and centre Dane Gagai also crossing for three tries.
However, Souths' return to form after last Sunday’s 56-12 loss to Penrith and a 50-0 defeat by Melbourne three weeks ago was overshadowed by the potential loss of Walker, Murray, Mahoney, Brown and Matterson from Origin contention.
Brown was placed on report twice for crusher tackles on Walker and Souths second-rower Keaon Koloamatangi, who was also the alleged victim of dangerous contact from Mahoney, while Matterson was sin-binned for a high shot on Tevita Tatola.
Murray, who is considered a certain selection for NSW if available, was placed on report for a crusher tackle on Ferguson, while Walker was reported for a high tackle on rookie Eels five-eighth Jakob Arthur.
Walker, who is vying with Canberra’s Jack Wighton and Penrith’s Jarome Luai for the NSW No.6 jersey or a place on the interchange, was suspended earlier this season for striking Canterbury’s Nick Meaney and was also fined for a contrary conduct charge from the same match.
If he escapes a charge, Walker will have given Fittler food for thought as he combined with fellow Indigenous stars Gagai, Johnston and Latrell Mitchell to terrorise the Parramatta right-edge defence, while hooker Damien Cook was also in top form and should retain the NSW No.9 jersey.
Cook opened the scoring in just the second minute of the match when he raced over from a scrum win near the Parramatta line after Eels captain Clint Gutherson lost the ball in a tackle by Walker and prop Mark Nichols as he returned an Adam Reynolds kick.
Walker then combined with Mitchell to put Johnston in for his first try in the 10th minute but a Gutherson try from an Arthur kick gave the Eels a glimmer of hope.
However, the Rabbitohs took advantage of the sin-binning of second-rower Isaiah Papali'i for a professional foul after a try-saving tackle by Gutherson on centre Taane Milne to take a 20-6 lead at halftime after tries to Gagai and Johnston.
Walker was the creator of both tries, combining with Mitchell to lay on Johnson’s second try in the 31st minute and then throwing a cut-out pass for Gagai to score two minutes before halftime.
Gagai got his second try in the 46th minute off a Walker pass following a scrum win and the pair combined for Johnson’s third try in the 61st minute.
Not to be outdone, Gagai completed his hat-trick six minutes later before Mika Sivo and Arthur scored late tries for the Eels.
