Eels v Sea Eagles: Round 25 preview
Manly are back to life without Tom Trbojevic (pectoral tear) as they head to Bankwest Stadium to battle the Eels.
Both clubs are finals-bound so there's no immediate squeeze on this result. But the Sea Eagles' progress through September might have a shorter shelf life now that 'Turbo' has had his engines switched off.
Manly won four of the 10 matches Trbojevic missed earlier in the season through two separate hamstring tears, as further evidence of his value to the side.
The Eels would enjoy ironing out a few wrinkles that have caused a minor drop in form. They followed four straight wins with back-to-back losses to the Bulldogs and Broncos over the past fortnight.
The Rundown
Key match-up
The way opposing halfbacks Daly Cherry-Evans (Sea Eagles) and Mitch Moses (Eels) choose to end their sets will be a feature of this game. The Eels failed to complete 11 of their 38 sets in the loss to the Broncos and the Manly didn't finish off 10 of their 31 sets going down to Storm. Both these No.7s pride themselves on not only controlling their game plans, but getting to their kicks. So whoever impresses more on the fifth tackle options will go a long way to securing a win. They are also in top-three in the NRL for try assists this year.
For the Eels to win
Getting the back five back to ignite more often. Both centre Michael Jennings and winger Blake Ferguson have been out injured recently, which has disrupted the flow a little. Jennings and Maika Sivo are a powerful combination but Ferguson and mid-season Penrith recruit Waqa Blake could be equally as dangerous - they just need time. Last week was their first game together.
For the Sea Eagles to win
Cherry-Evans, his two hookers in Api Koroisau and Manase Fainu, and five-eighth Dylan Walker have to make sure they continue to keep the attack flowing without Trbojevic. Engaging the ball-playing skills of the other Trbojevic brother, Jake, will go a long way towards that. TT's likely replacement Brendan Elliot also knows the drill as he's played 11 of his 15 games this year at No.1. So he won't need a lot of tutoring from Cherry-Evans - he just needs to pick up where he left off the last time Turbo was absent.
Brett Kimmorley says
The great old rivalry is back again. The unfortunate thing for Manly is that Tom Trbojevic is gone. His absence takes so much away from the team and will put a lot of pressure on DCE to be the main creator in attack outside of the forwards. Blake Ferguson’s return was a huge in for Parramatta last week. They want to get on a winning note before the finals and I think Brad Arthur will have them absolutely primed for this. Eels by 2
Stat Attack
Cherry-Evans leads the NRL in 40/20s and he loves to turn the momentum of a game by catching the opposition off guard.
And another thing ...
Former Roosters and Fiji international prop Kane Evans is looking to celebrate his 100th NRL game by playing in Eels colours. He's run over 110 metres per game for the past four weeks so another effort like that will warrant popping a champagne cork or two.

Sivo bags a hat-trick as Eels leapfrog Manly into fifth spot
Hat-trick hero Maika Sivo helped the Eels avenged their round 18 defeat to the Sea Eagles and snapped a two-match losing streak with a 32-16 win at Bankwest Stadium that propels Parramatta into the NRL finals with crucial momentum.
Parramatta return to finals footy after missing out in 2018 the kings of their custom-built fortress and with their latest smiling assassin Sivo sitting on top of the NRL try-scoring table.
The mood in the visitors sheds was the polar opposite with big prop Martin Taupau a chance of joining fellow big gun Tom Tbrojevic in the stands for next week's opening round of finals after being charged over a high shot.
Taupau will face a nervous wait after knocking Ray Stone out with a swinging arm that hit the Parramatta benchman across his nose, the Samoan enforcer sin-binned midway early in the second half as Stone was taken off on the medicab.
Parramatta's Kane Evans too was marched and placed on report for collecting Brad Parker across the back of the head as Manly surged home.
Sivo, meanwhile, caused all sorts of chaos on his own, smiling the whole way.
The 25,034-strong Bankwest Stadium crowd responded in kind, a resounding "Sivo" chant ringing out when he bagged his 18th, 19th and 20th tries of the season – going past Latrell Mitchell as the NRL's leading try-scorer in the process.
More than ever Sivo reprised the frightening flyer role of first Eric Grothe, then compatriot Semi Radradra, as Parramatta ruthlessly dissected Manly's rejigged backline.
Brendan Elliott was named at fullback during the week as Trbojevic's replacement, but started opposite Sivo with Reuben Garrick shifting from the wing.
Within minutes, though, Elliott was merely a bug on the Fijian's windscreen, Sivo simply flattening him before laying on Michael Jennings' opening four-pointer.
Throughout the first 40 Sivo had a field day without reward, Garrick only just managing to hold him up in-goal on another occasion, Sivo then belting him in return as he covered up a short kick.
Coming off consecutive losses, but back at the new stadium where they hold an eight from 10 record, the Eels were on their way within 10 minutes.
Following Jennings' opening salvo, Parramatta came and conquered from the very next set.
Clint Gutherson this time was on the end of a long Waqa Blake break, early offloads and slick hands sending the former Panther deep into the backfield.
Manly's worries simply continued to mount. Big man Taniela Paseka was forced off early with a knee injury, Curtis Sironen also felled shortly after halftime.
When Taupau was given his marching orders Parramatta jumped out to a 16-2 lead.
But reduced to 12 men on the paddock, the Sea Eagles struck back through Manase Fainu, the young hooker burrowing through four defenders from a Lloyd Perrett offload.
Sivo's response – latching on to a Dylan Brown grubber down the short side – kept Parramatta in the ascendancy.
But Fainu got himself over once more, contentiously this time as a one-on-one strip on Perrett was answered in kind by Fainu.
The Tongan international then grubbered the ball ahead to score despite questions over a knock-on and exactly where Manly's advantage to play-on started and stopped.
When Taupau returned and Evans replaced him in the bin Manly trailed 22-16 and threatened to bridge the gap against a 12-man defence.
It was Sivo who put a stop to it.
Once more finding himself one-on-one with a hapless Garrick from close range, the Parra powerhouse went straight through him with five minutes remaining.
Sivo's final salvo saw the Eels shift from one side of the field to the other, and pushed them past Manly into fifth place on points differential.
Parramatta now wait until Sunday to learn their finals opponents, Cronulla, Wests Tigers or Brisbane all a possibility.
Manly face the same equation, along with a mounting injury toll and the match review committee's verdict on Taupau.
