Eels v Rabbitohs: Ma'u returns as Origin troops bolster Souths
Despite being without Origin quartet Greg Inglis, Dane Gagai, Angus Crichton and Damien Cook for last week's road duel with the Titans, the Rabbitohs barely skipped a beat, chalking up their sixth straight win to remain on track for a top four finish.
It was closer than the Bunnies would've liked but they would've filed it under the "a win's a win" category. Of all the teams in the top eight, the Bunnies might have the most enviable run to the finals. They play the Eels twice, including Thursday's round 15 clash at ANZ Stadium.
While they weren't overly convincing against the Titans, they still took care of a team that is bound to spring an upset or two over the second half of the regular season – and they did so without four of their best players. But they can't underestimate the Eels, who produced one of their best efforts of the season to upset the Cowboys.
Last-placed Parra relieved a little pressure by beating the Cows but it was just their third win in 14 games. The Eels should have an extra spring in their step this week but will have to raise the bar a lot higher to overcome Souths.
Key match-up: They didn't get to face off in Origin I but Jarryd Hayne and Greg Inglis still rate as two of the game's biggest drawcards. Inglis was superb as captain of a losing Maroons side and will be itching to get back on the field after being rested for the Rabbitohs' win over Gold Coast. Hayne returned with a bang last week after missing six weeks through injury, scoring two tries in Parra's 20-14 upset of the Cowboys. Inglis and Hayne are expected to line up opposite each other in the centres.
For the Eels to win: For the first time in a long time the Eels looked like a confident, competent team last week against the Cows. It was far from a five-star display, but they should make a team pact to play with the same commitment to each other for the rest of the season. They have to follow Hayne's lead, muscle up in the forwards against the big Rabbitohs pack and also need Clint Gutherson to play as well as he did against the Cowboys.
For the Rabbitohs to win: Most wake-up calls come in the form of losses. Last week the Rabbitohs got a timely wake-up call but still managed to win. They get their four Origin guns back this week and should be in the mood to show the Eels they are out of their depth. Souths have an edge up front and out wide and will be looking to exploit both.
Eels Stat Attack: The Eels will have some extra motivation this week with Michael Jennings set to play his 250th NRL game. In 2007 Jennings made his debut for the Panthers in their round two thrashing over the Bulldogs and bagged his first NRL try.
Rabbitohs Stat Attack: Anthony Seibold has made the Bunnies look unstoppable, with the club aiming for seven straight wins for the first time since 1994.
And another thing: Was it just a coincidence the Eels got a win without Mitch Moses? Some Parra fans thought not. No-one questions Moses's talent as a footballer but, rightly or wrongly, doubts linger over his ability to control the Eels' attack and direct them around the park. If the Eels manage to win again in his absence, Moses might not walk straight back into first grade when he recovers from a knee injury.

Manu Ma'u returns to the starting side after missing last weekend's trip to Darwin and Marata Niukore goes back to the bench with Siosaia Vave the 18th man. South Sydney flexed their attacking muscle to climb to to top spot in the Telstra Premiership as Robert Jennings bagged four tries in the 42-24 win over Parramatta on Thursday.
Although the Rabbitohs share 22 competition points with the Dragons and Panthers, their commanding win gave them a far better points differential. So they will stay kings of the castle for at least 24 hours until Penrith play the Roosters.
Souths were superior in so many areas at ANZ Stadium, their victory coming off the back of a magnificent night's work to winger Jennings, who spoiled his brother Michael's 250th NRL game, and a brace to fullback Alex Johnston.
Halves Adam Reynolds and Cody Walker were also on song as the Bunnies piled on seven tries in the space of 33 minutes after trailing 14-6.
The four-try haul by Jennings had many scurrying for the record books only to find that eight Souths players have scored five tries in the one game – the most recent was Johnston against Penrith in round 17 last year.
In truth the winning margin would have been inflated further if Reynolds had as much success with his goalkicking [four from eight] as he had with his attacking plays.
The Rabbitohs have now slammed seven straight wins in the middle of the season for the first time since 1994. Things were going so well, skipper Greg Inglis was rested with 10 minutes left to play.
No wonder the rumour mill is churning that coach Anthony Siebold will be a man in demand, when his contract ends at the end of 2019. The Brisbane Broncos are said to be interested if Craig Bellamy decides to stay put at Storm.
The Eels were in touch at halftime, trailing by just two, 16-14. But five tries in the second half consigned Brad Arthur's men to a 12th defeat for the year and erased the spark that emerged from the 20-14 win over the Cowboys last weekend.
Jarryd Hayne scored a consolation try in the 67th minute and Josh Hoffman another in the 74th but fans had begun heading to the exits before then.
The lead changed four times in the opening 40 minutes as the Jennings show unfolded.
Proceedings started in the best possible way for Parramatta with a try to Hoffman off a Corey Norman kick in just the third minute, helped by a fumble from Souths winger Hymel Hunt.
But then disaster struck with a mix-up between Hoffman and Manu Ma'u from the kickoff, resulting in a scrum for South Sydney 10 metres out. Robert Jennings got his scoring started with a try in the left corner to put Souths up 6-4.
Six minutes later and Eels winger George Jennings scored in the right corner for the home side to take back the lead 8-6. The gap was extended when Bevan French supported a Peni Terepo run to the line.
Then Robert Jennings scored his second, followed by Alex Johnston, and the Rabbitohs were back in front 16-14. From there it was a procession and Robert Jennings scored another two tries in the second half to give him 12 from 13 games.
News & Notes: Eels players wore black armbands for the second anniversary of the death of 17-year-old Adam Lees, a promising junior. It was a request from his father and the club willingly obliged....The Eels have won only two of their past 10 games at ANZ Stadium... Rabbitohs fullback Alex Johnston has scored 21 tries in his past 12 games at ANZ Stadium... Parramatta's Reed Mahoney went on report for a crusher tackle on Cameron Murray in the 44th minute... Crowd: 8047 for the highest-scoring game so far this year.
