Manly experienced a horror replay of last year's Grand Final and this season's first round thrashing by Parramatta when they again went down to the Eels at Belmore last Sunday.
Once again Manly was hit for six by a brilliant and totally committed Parramatta side by 26-6. It was a similar thrashing from the first round (24-6) and the grand final (21-8).
Parramatta achieved the victory most convincingly and again it was their slick backs - particularly the centres - who paved the way.
Steve Ella and Mick Cronin had grand games with Ella running off the magnificent passes he received from Cronin. The 'peaches and cream' centres had great support in the backs from Peter Sterling, Brett Kenny and David Liddiard.
Up front young Paul Mares and Stan Jurd were the pick of a pack which outplayed Manly and set up the play for the backs.
From the fourth minute when Steve Ella raced over for the first of his team's tries the premiers were never going to lose.
Manly played brightly enough in patches but Parramatta's swarming defence always had them in check.
Midway through the first half more than three quarters of the team kept the ball alive before hooker Steve Edge dived over for a tremendous try.
Cronin's conversion completed the scoring for the first half.
The Manly revival failed to come after the break and the Parramatta backs took charge with two quick long distance tries.
Kenny scored the first after a Cronin break and midfield pass. Ella scored the second after Liddiard scooted along the sideline.
At 22-0 it was an embarrassing scoreline for Manly but so well were the Eels playing that it would have been the same against any opposition.
Parramatta 26 (S.Ella 2, B.Kenny, P.Sterling, S.Edge tries, M.Cronin 3 goals) defeated Manly 6 (M.Blake try, G.Eadie goal). Referee: B.Barnes. Crowd: 25,028.
