The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have become the first team in history to qualify for the NRL Grand Final from eighth position, winning through on the back of a 22-12 defeat of the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium.
In a pulsating match played in front of a non-Grand Final record crowd of 74,549, the Eels scored three second half tries to overcome a 12-6 half time deficit.
The win was not without incident for the Eels, with skipper Nathan Cayless suffering a hamstring injury while Jarryd Hayne and Matthew Keating were put on report during a torrid opening 40 minutes.
The Bulldogs overcame the first minute loss of fullback Luke Patten - who missed the entire first half and the start of the second after being knocked out in his side's first tackle of the match - to lead six nil just three minutes later, with winger Bryson Goodwin swooping on a Hazem El Masri grubber to score in the corner.
Goodwin got the ball down just before the arrival of Hayne, who was penalised and put on report after sliding into Goodwin while trying to stop the try.
El Masri missed the conversion but added the penalty from in front to put the Bulldogs ahead by six.
In an action packed opening to the match the Eels lost Cayless after ten minutes, while the Bulldogs defence was a stand out - at one point repelling the Eels for a set and a half following a gigantic Hayne 40-20.
A penalty in front of the Eels posts after Michael Ennis took out Fuifui Moimoi laid the platform for the Eels first, Hayne splitting three defenders before handing off for Joe Galuvao to score beneath the posts.
Luke Burt added the extras to lock it up at 6-all.
Five minutes out from the break Josh Morris snuck under the guard of Hayne to score his side's second, with El Masri adding the extras for a 12-6 lead.
Matt Keating was put on report for a tackle on Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant two minutes out from the break, while the half finished with Brett Kimmorley missing with a field goal attempt that would have put the Dogs seven points clear.
Good lead up work from Feleti Mateo and Krisnan Inu saw Burt score down the left ten minutes into the second half, narrowing the gap to two at 12-10.
Four minutes later they hit the lead for the first time in the match, Hayne, Jeff Robson and Kevin Kingston handling in a passage that finished in a first career try to Tim Mannah.
Burt converted to put the Eels out to a 16-12 lead.
The Eels were then denied a try by video referee Bill Harrigan, Kevin Kingston touching down only to be called back for a knock on by Inu.
The decisive play went the way of rookie five eighth - and son of Bulldogs royalty - Daniel Mortimer, who finished off a 50 metre movement to drive a stake through the heart of every Bulldogs supporter with a try nine minutes from time.
Burt converted in the last scoring play of the match, the southern end of ANZ Stadium going up as one as the Eels faithful celebrated their team's passage through to the final match of 2009, where they will play the winner out of Saturday's second preliminary final between the Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos.
