23rd September 1984 The 1984 grand final was a thriller, with Canterbury making the most of the few chances which came in a gruelling clash. The premiership was won and lost in the traditional danger period immediately before and after halftime. Even Canterbury and Parramatta, the two most disciplined sides in the competition, could not escape its clutches. Both sides missed chances in the first half. For the Eels Eric Grothe dropped a sitter with the SCG's infamous 'Neville Glover' corner beckoning, while referee Roberts ruled 'no-try' when Peter Mortimer accepted a forward pass from Terry Lamb and crossed. Parramatta grabed a 4-0 lead ninety seconds before the break when the ubiquitous Sterling and Kenny combined to put Mick Cronin over. It looked like the match winner. However three minutes into the second half Mark Bugden thundered past John Muggleton and Paul Taylor to score a superb individual try, and Chris Mortimer steered through his only shot at goal for the day. Canterbury had hit the front 6-4. Cronin missed his grab at immortality three minutes before fulltime, pulling a shot at goal after Mick Mullane was penalised for not getting off Chris Phelan. Canterbury's fourth premiership was a credit to both the effectiveness of Warren Ryan's coaching and to the best team in the competition. Three-time Parramatta premiership captain Steve Edge announced his retirement at the end of the match. Canterbury 6 (M.Bugden try, C.Mortimer goal) defeated Parramatta 4 (M.Cronin try). Referee: K.Roberts. Crowd: 47,076. The Finals. The History of NSW Rugby League Finals. Steve Haddan

Canterbury ended the Eels' three-year domination of the premiership with a 6-4 grand final victory. Bulldogs hooker Mark Bugden scored his team's only try shortly after halftime when injured Parramatta lock Ray Price left a hole in the defensive line.
