Parramatta showed why they are the champions at the SCG on Sunday when they held off a challenge from Canterbury to win an exciting preliminary semi-final, 30-22.
In the first minutes of the match, Gary Hughes created a chance when he dummied then went through the gap and when the cover converged on him he attempted to get a pass to Ross Conlon.
Luckily for Parramatta, Steve Ella intercepted the pass and knocked it down otherwise it was a certain try.
Ten minutes into the match Chris Mortimer attempted to clear his line with a kick but it was charged down by Parramatta halfback Peter Sterling.
With luck on his side, the ball bounced back over the Canterbury line and Sterling, following up, fell on the ball and when Cronin converted, Parramatta led 8-0.
In the 24th minute in a display of awesome power and determination, Eric Grothe went through five Canterbury tacklers and took the sixth over the line with him.
Six minutes later Parramatta scored another power try. Brett Kenny back to his very best, beat four defenders before sending the ball to Mick Cronin.
Cronin beat one tackler and drew another two in to him before slipping the ball back to Kenny who went past two desperate defenders to touch down.
Canterbury after halftime did not waste any time in storming back into the match. Geoff Robinson crashed through two defenders to score his team's first points and then Andrew Farrar touched down from a bomb.
That reduced Parramatta's lead to 18-10 but Kenny boosted his team's advantage when he intercepted a pass from Billy Johnstone and the premiers led 24-10.
A minute later Peter Mortimer gave Tony Armstrong an easy run to the line then Steve Mortimer, in a typical piece of football magic, short kicked, regained the ball and scored.
That cut Parramatta's lead to 24-22 with five tries scored in the first 19 minutes of the half.
Two minutes from the finish, Steve Ella sent out a long and lofted pass to replacement centre Will Harris who dashed over wide out for the match clinching try.
Parramatta 30 (B.Kenny 2, P.Sterling, E.Grothe, W.Harris tries, M.Cronin 5 goals) defeated Canterbury 22 (G.Robinson, A.Farrar, T.Armstrong, S.Mortimer tries, T.Armstrong 3 goals). Referee: B.Barnes. Crowd: 22,311.
