Midway through the 1982 Kangaroo tour Great Britain coach Johnny Whitely tagged Parramatta's Peter Sterling as the world's best player.
Those who saw Sterling perform for the Eels in their 19-6 win over Canberra at Belmore last Saturday would readily agree.
The Test half scored two brilliant solo tries in the first 18 minutes of the game which brought the Raiders' great early season run of success to an end.
Sterling was celebrating his first game as Parramatta captain and his 100th first grade appearance.
Eels' coach John Monie expected him to perform the way he did and took steps before the game to limit his workload.
"Peter's enthusiasm is boundless and while I didn't want to curb him in any way I knew he would try to take too much on his own shoulders," he said.
"So I asked Brett Kenny and Steve Ella to get involved in the action wherever possible to give Peter a breather."
Kenny and Ella followed the coach's instructions to the letter and if it hadn't been for the top defensive effort from Canberra winger Billy Walker they would both have finished with a bag full of tries.
Ella made three clean breaks and was pulled down by Walker each time and Kenny suffered a similar fate on another occasion.
Despite the loss, the Raiders did not lose admirers and on Saturdays form they will be extremely hard to beat, especially at Seiffert Oval.
